Default Guillermo Vargas Habacuc -- Killer, or Artist

I tried to find neutral articles, I found one and one criticizing one -- there is a lot of speculation into whether the stray dog died or survived.

Here is my response after reading a lot of posts that were on a group I was invited to on FaceBook. If this picks up I'll discuss my own opinions on the nature of this situation.

----

I think we can all agree that the suffering of this dog in the name of art is both shocking, disturbing, nauseating, infuriating, etc. -- these pictures make me really sad -- particularly the one of the dog with the audience in the background.

HOWEVER.

I consider this as "shock and awe" protesting, not so much art. Allow me to explain why before you wish death and disfigurement upon me as well, like so many other hotheaded and irrational people have done to anyone who's attempted to defend this guy. If you were in Mexico and you saw this dog on the street, what would you do? Say things like "that's so sad"? Buy it a bit of food? Would you pet it? Adopt it? Adopt the THOUSANDS of other dogs starving in Mexico? Somewhere in that line of questions, you will answer "no." You will tell yourself that you can only do so much. This guy, Guillermo Vargas Habacuc, has forced you to reconsider that ambivalence toward helping animals like this.

While it sounds like I am trivializing the life of this dog (which I don't mean to), by being starved to death in public, this dog has been given a purpose. Guillermo Vargas Habacuc has FORCED you to watch this dog die, because you wouldn't watch it if you saw it dying on the street. You wouldn't feed it, you wouldn't touch it, you wouldn't help it -- most of you probably wouldn't even want to look at it. I wouldn't be surprised if this guy who hired the kids actually likes animals -- shocking, I know. By forcing you to see this, he is trying to force you to DO SOMETHING to help the countless other strays that will die of starvation JUST LIKE THIS ONE. Only the ones outside won't be depicted on Facebook. They won't have millions of people demonizing the person that forced people to pay attention to it. They will die, starving and alone, on the fucking street.

Let me pose a question, how many of you gave a flying fuck about starving dogs in Mexico until you saw this?

I'm going to assume the answer is the vast majority of you didn't, if you were even aware it was such a problem. Having it shoved in your face has forced you to acknowledge and react, and you wish rape/death/torture/etc on the fucking messenger!?

Would you read a pamphlet about this and react like you have to the publisher? No.

Would you watch a TV special on the starving dog population and react like you have to the broadcaster? No.

Guillermo Vargas Habacuc CAN NOT solve the issue of starving dogs on his own. That's why he is MAKING you care. He is FORCING you to watch a dog die to make you aware of the fact that many more just like it die on a daily basis, with no one to cry for them. I hate to defend this. I really do... but most of you have completely missed the point of what's being presented here. I doubt he took any joy in this -- and while I can't speak for him, I would hope that proceeds from his show go toward fixing the problem he has so effectively drawn attention to.

One more thing.

To all of these people calling the artist a murderer...
...what the fuck are YOU going to do about it?

Sign a petition? Bra-vo.

If you read this article and you sit on your computers condemning everyone who even partially sides with this guy, yet do nothing to stop the other countless dogs from dying of starvation, you are an accomplice to this so-called "murder." You want him to stop? Start a donation service to create shelters for these dogs. Pay for their food, their water, their medical needs, their shelter. Put your money where your overactive, petty fucking mouths are and do something to FIX THE PROBLEM.
