I haven't been reading lately, but the last book I read was Room by Emma Donoghue. I was immediately sucked into the story and finished it in 2 days! Looove this book!
I can't say much about it without giving too much away... basically the entire story is told by a kid, and his entire life has been spent in one room. The room, his mother, and everything in the room is all that he knows. They have a television, and everything he has seen through television is make believe if it hasn't existed in Room.
The author does an amazing job of telling the story as a child and you really feel something for the kid and his mother. <3

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Room_%28novel%29 <<(This gives away the entire story.)

I'm reading 3 books at the moment. I get bored if I just stick to one.

Dracula by Bram Stoker
The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
On The Origin of Species by Charles Darwin

Really different styles and topics, I know, but I'm enjoying them. lol

How are you liking them? I found Origin of Species to be an interesting read and I absolutely loved Dracula, but never read the Hunger Games. How is it hitting you so far?

I last finished The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexander Dumas. It was alright, but this is one of those exceedingly rare situations were I actually liked the movie better than the book. I think a big part of that is that Dumas was more of a business man and opportunist than an authentic literary figure. Totally the Thomas Kinkade of literature! By that I mean he would steal another artists general idea, have a team of ghost-artists do the bulk of the work and then step in and add a few flourishes and his signature. True story on both counts.

That works well enough for uninspired "painter of light" garbage to hang on a wall, but doesn't suit story-telling too well. The result was a tad disjointed and a bit rambling. I'm wondering if M.Dumas was getting paid by the word as Victor Hugo was (explains a thing or 2 about M.Hugo's absurdly long passages, eh).

All in all it was still an interesting read and I'd recommend it if you want to absorb something quick and easy in the vein of adventure-betrayal.

I'm thinking about re-reading Ender's Game, as I am in love with the series, but I've been neglecting The History of Madness (Michal Focault) since December so maybe I'd better dive back into that one. I'll probably end up jumping back and forth between the two. Sometimes you need to give yourself a break of too dense a read for something easy to devour for the fun of it.

I'll be reading "The Hunger Games" soon since Sara just finished it recently. She really enjoyed it and it sounded a lot like Battle Royale.

I'm in the Gluttonous layer of Hell right now. Just started reading Inferno by Larry Niven & Jerry Pournelle. It's a modern telling of Dante Alighieri's Inferno. The book features Sci-Fi novelist Allen Carpentier who, (presumably) at Comic Con, tries to win the votes of his fans for the next Hugo Award by endearing them to him via his post-con drinking antics. Things don't quite go as planned on the precipice of his 8th floor hotel room window and he finds himself unbelievably in the Vestibule of Hell where he meets his guide, Benito, and the journey continues.

So far so good. It's been nice reading Inferno in a dialect that isn't so antiquated. Having descriptions of the various circles that aren't in meter and rhyme is also an appreciated new experience. It definitely makes me want to go back and reread The Divine Comedy after I'm through.

I read "The Hunger Games" yesterday. Just barely started "Catching Fire" today and I won't be reading this one in one day because I want to get other things done.

I was afraid it might be too much like Battle Royale, but it's not at all. Sure, the premise is the same, in that they're fighting to the death and there can be just one victor, but that's about it. BR is A LOT more brutal and you get to see the game through everyone's perspective, and in turn there's a lot of character development. HG is told only by Katniss and focuses more on a love story.
I can't wait to get through the next 2 books!

Heather, I had no idea that what Hunger Games was about. I had only ever heard the love story aspect of it. You finished it in a day; it must have been an intriguing read. Would you recommend it?

Loving Dracula. I'm really enjoying the way it's written.

Origin of Species is great. Rather dry at times so I switch to the other two when it's too much.

The Hunger Games is kind of meh for me right now. I'm only a few chapters in though. I've heard a lot of good things so I'm sticking it out until the end of the book. Then I'll decide on reading the other 2.

I'm also trying to find my H.P. Lovecraft collection that I misplaced when I moved. Really strange stories, usually with sudden twists, if you've never read any of his work.
