Default A little help getting an A?

Hey All,

I'm currently working on a sociological study on the influence of gender on gaming experiences for my research class. . Would anyone be interested in filling out a short questionnaire to help out? It will only take five to ten minutes to complete and would help a ton! I've posted it below, you can email your completed survey to munkygobananas@gmail.com if you don't want to post it here. This is for a school project, not spam or corporate anything! Everything is competely confidential and will only be used for the purposes of the study (which is to get an A in my research class). I can't wait to hear from you guys!

Thanks!

Thank you for taking the time to complete this survey. I hope to gain a greater understanding of the effect of gender on gamers’ experiences. This research will allow us to see differences and similarities in the way that gender influences both male and female gamers. Please complete the survey to the best of your ability. Thank You!

Section 1
These questions focus on demographic information to give us a clear picture of today’s gamer.

What is your age?
What is your gender?
What is your primary gaming platform?
Which types of game do you predominately play?
How long have you been playing video games?

Section 2 – Gender in Games
These questions focus on players’ perceptions of gender and how their gender is represented in games.

Do you prefer to play games with characters of your own gender?
If you are able to choose the gender of your character, do you choose you own gender over another?
How important of a consideration do you think is a character’s gender to your enjoyment of a game?
Do you feel that your gender is accurately represented in video games?
If given the choice between two identical games where one main character was of your own gender and the other was not, but in all other ways equal, which would you choose?

Section 3 – Gender Discrimination in Gaming
These questions focus on the ways in which other players respond to each others’ genders.

Does the gender of a player determine how you interact with them?
Do you think your gender affects the way other players treat you?
If other players are not aware of your gender, do you specify it?
Do you feel that other players generally react to your gender: Positively, Neutrally, Negatively?
How often do other players acknowledge your gender during gameplay?
How often do other players make negative comments about your gender during gameplay?
How often to other players exclude you from playing because of your gender?
How often do other players attack you/your characters because of your gender?
How often do you feel your gender plays a role in how other players react to you/your characters?
How often do other players use gender slurs or insults referring to people of your gender?
How often do other players express sexual interest in you/your character(s) because of your gender?

Thank you for participating in this research! Your input will significantly help form an understanding of gender’s influence on today’s gamer and is greatly appreciated!

So far there are 7 responses there if you want to go collect that data. Also, some one sent me the following, which I thought was pretty cool <3

"In response to a "hot gamer girl" getting crap for promoting herself as such. This also goes for Cosplay too. Being artistic enough to deisgn and create a complex costume is a serious display of artistic and nerdy talent.

Any effort to shift to glamorize intellectual "nerdy" pursuits is an important one. I would rather see bikini clad "nerdy girls" getting 100's of thousands of dollars for bikini contests and modeling contracts than the current vacuous barbie dolls. A paradigm shift is in order, and you are on the battle front. That is why I post all the party pictures and whatnot. I am a nerd and geek of the highest order, yet it looks like I have transcended the label. All good things come from nerds, electricity and plastic to name just a few "minor" ones. In public school, some idiot with a slightly faster neuro chemical response and talent with inflated leather bags get all the glamor and the girls. The cookie cutter barbie doll who biggest goal is to get fake boobs when she turns 18 gets all of the advantages. Shifting it toward "computer using RPG/video gaming intellectual nerdy girls" getting all the kudos and becoming what is viewed as "cool" and "hot" is an important message as shallow as it seems.

This country is backwards. Ignorance and conformity are rewarded, while the people with real value are ridiculed (for being INTELLIGENT) to the point of going to entirely different schools that cost money or are not nearby. The "hot gamer girl" concept is an important one to promote because, like it or not, people like pretty. Being popular and socially accepted is important to people weather they want to admit it or not. Why not be popular for the right reasons. Some people turn their nose up at the idea of "popularity" but in reality they are turning their noses up at the people who are popular. They are popular because they act in ways that make them popular; Being good at sports, ridiculing the different, backstabbing politics, latest fashion ect, ect ect. If popularity was defined as "intellectual free thinking computer (gamer) nerds" would the idea of being "the cool kid" be so noxious? I think not."
