Hostel part two -semi spoilers inside- The movie was great in the sense that it was better than the first Hostel, which absolutely sucked in my opinion. There was not an excessive amount of ugly European boobs, nor was there too much whoring or drug use. There was some nudity and sexual reference, as well as drug reference, but nothing too obscene. The violence was gruesome, but not unstomachable. Honestly, the footage from the war in the Middle East is more horrifying than anything in this movie... but I’m not going to talk politics right now. That’s about a book’s worth of angry ranting right there haha!
There was one scene in which the nerdy girl of the group of three female travelers hung naked upside down in the factory. I was expecting unnecessary rape, being that she was first shown with a large European male. But contrary to my prediction, a woman was the killer. A creepy, horny, witch-like woman, naked and ready to bathe in the girl’s blood. Reminiscent of things I’ve read on Satanic rituals... a very good chilling addition to the gore film. The noises of the blade on the skin were completely unrealistic, but very blood curdling. No pun intended.
The beginning was slow and drawn out, the audience came for blood and pointless guts, not a whole big intro. They tied the first movie into the second amatuerly... but they get a C for effort. It wasn’t essential, and it didn’t relate to the main plot whatsoever, but I suppose they felt that had to have some sort of segway.
There was a large “Harvest Festival” leading us to believe it was around Halloween time in the story. The scene showing all the festivities was really well done. I said to my friend, that aside from the murder and such, it looked like a really fun place to go. There was great costumes in this particular scene, and large paper mache [I assume] heads, similar to the Jew devil in Borat. It was all exciting, traditional music playing, cider going round, much dancing. I sort of wished I were there haha!
In the end, the character I liked best... mainly because I related to her more than any of the other characters... came out victorious. She ended up “dismembering” the gentleman who used the C word to describe her. Very feminist in a twisted sort of way. I was semi-resentful that she stole an idea I had for a revenge on a gentleman in real life who had screwed me over before. [No I wasn’t actually going to do it, I just found it appropriate and ironic. No need to call the FBI or consult my counselor, it’s simply amusing to joke about.] “Haha now I can’t do it or they’ll think I got it from the movie!” I said to my friend. We both laughed, being violent girls. The part we didn’t like is that the man, before the heroine got the upper hand, was going to have sex with her in a very arrogant, disgustingly brutal sort of way. He was so demanding and shouting out orders, it was terrible. Rape is a touchy subject for people who take the time to actually think about it, and I personally am very violent when it’s presented, whether on screen, in a story, or even in some dumb joke amongst a group of scum bag boys. So if you are a similar type of person when it comes to that, I suggest averting your eyes and ears for this part.
Overall, I wouldn’t pay money to see it. I had a gift card so I didn’t have to... but for anyone else, I’d say wait until it comes out on video. If you’re out with a group of friends and want to see something scary, this is not it. It is gruesome and has plot twists, it fulfills the typical humans need for the occasional violent footage, but it is not a thriller in any way shape or form. It will not have you on the edge of your seat, and you will not jump at any point in the movie. I give it two out of five stars. |
